Story of Travis Sharpe on “UNSHACKLED!”

I have heard the radio program “UNSHACKLED!” for many years now. It is a dramatized radio program that features real stories of how people have trusted Christ as their Savior. The program is heard each week on over 2600 radio stations around the world.

It is also the longest running dramatized radio program ever! The radio program is a ministry of Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, IL which is one of the largest and oldest gospel missions in the world. In fact, this is the same mission where Billy Sunday and Mel Trotter were saved!

Well, I am excited to tell you that the producers of the program have decided to produce and air my testimony! Tentatively, the production date is September 20, 2014 and it is set to air the week of January 18th, 2015. They just sent me the final script a couple days ago for final approval.

Here are a couple statements from their website.

Real people…real life stories…stirring, dramatic accounts of hopelessness, and the hope that changes everything. “UNSHACKLED!” the award-winning radio drama from Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, grips the heart with compelling and relevant stories of transformed lives.

Today “UNSHACKLED!” is broadcast around the world almost 12,000 times each week on over 2600 radio outlets. In addition to the English broadcast, it is translated and re-dramatized in Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Romanian Polish, Korean, Japanese, Farsi, Albanian, Greek, Macedonian, Turkish and Portuguese.

Who? Me?

Never in a million years did I ever think that my own testimony of how I got saved would be considered for the program! I mean, I know me. I never thought that my story would be able to have an impact on other people in a way that would be worthy of a radio broadcast.

It’s not about me.

One thing I really like about the program and it’s producers is how they describe your testimony. They say that your testimony is “the story of God in your life.”

I agree 100%.

And I can think of no better definition for grace than the story of God in someone’s life. I am so thankful that when I could not come to where he was, he came to me!

The radio program will be a synopsis of my life from the time I was a boy until we started our current ministry Unsheltered International.

The purpose of the radio broadcast is to share these real life stories with millions of listeners in hopes that God will use the stories of what he has done in others lives to bring more people to him. I like that purpose!

How it came about

In 2012 I was preaching at Faith Baptist Church in LaPorte, IN. That Sunday morning I was to teach Sunday School and Rev. Ervin McNeill was preaching in the morning service. Rev. McNeill is one of the pastors at Pacific Garden Mission and his wife Flossie is the producer for the “UNSHACKLED!” program.

The pastor asked me to share my testimony with the Sunday School class that morning. So I did. Not long after that Mrs. McNeill asked me if I would be interested in writing out my testimony and submitting it for consideration.

I procrastinated. Thankfully, they stayed on me about it and I finally took the time to write it all out. It was over seventeen pages and I really enjoyed putting my fingers to the keyboard and reliving what God has done in my life.

Will you help me pray?

I am praying that God will use this radio drama to somehow impact the lives of the people who hear it. The thought of someone around the world hearing about what God has done for me and then trusting God to help them as well is truly amazing.

Will you help me pray that God really blesses this story? I believe he surely will.

  1. Travis, this is Lee in Cullman. Yes, I have listened to the Unshackled Program! It is interesting to me not only for the content but the way in which the story is presented. The sound effects are reminiscent of radio programs during the early days of radio. The true stories are always fascinating and demonstrates The Miracle of our Saviour’s Love and Grace! Congratulations to you and Thanks Be to God for choosing you to share His Love to a hurting world. Your organization has helped me with several folks in our area looking for shelter. Tim Barbee has been a lifesaver and I am grateful to both of you for this ministry. Praying and believing your story will touch many lives.

  2. It’s one of my absolute fav programs I listen to through WMBW Moody Radio Southeast from 88.9FM
